There are many reasons why it is important to scoop your dog's poop. The obvious--dog poop gets stepped in and tracked into your home, it attracts flies and creates an unpleasant odor when left to accumulate in your yard. The not so obvious reason--dog poop carries parasites that can infect humans. Canine roundworms and hookworms that are excreted in dog feces can become infectious within 5-14 days in the environment (your backyard).   Whipworm and roundworm eggs in dog poop can remain infectious for years.
